An electronic ticket is useless if it refuses to open. And the ticket gate is exactly where the signal gives out: a packed station hall, an underground car park, an airport abroad with no roaming. Here is how to stop depending on a connection.
Why a ticket will not open
- It is still inside an email that your mail app never fully downloaded.
- It sits behind a link to your account on the seller’s website.
- The carrier’s app asks you to sign in again, which needs a connection.
In all three cases the ticket exists, just not on your phone.
The simple fixes
- Download the PDF to your phone’s files before you leave, and check that it opens in airplane mode.
- Take a screenshot of the code, complete and sharp.
- Add the ticket to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet when the seller offers it: a pass is always available offline.
Run the test the night before: airplane mode on, open every ticket. Whatever will not open that evening will not open at the station.
The fix that also keeps things tidy
Travel Wallet saves each ticket to the phone the moment it is added: the journey details, the code to scan, and the original document. Everything opens without a connection.
The code is not a photo of the ticket: it is regenerated from its content, which keeps it perfectly sharp at full screen, with brightness pushed to maximum. The common formats are supported: QR code, Aztec, PDF417 and classic barcodes.
Even more useful in a group
When one person made the booking, the whole group depends on their phone and their signal. By sharing the trip, every traveler has their ticket on their own device, available offline. If one phone runs out of battery, another member of the trip can show the code.
Checklist before you leave
- Every ticket opens in airplane mode.
- The code is complete and sharp, and the brightness goes up when you display it.
- At least two phones in the group hold each ticket.
- The phones are charged, and there is a power bank in the bag.
